About Me

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 10:46 AM

So now that I have more time I figure Id let everyone know my story. Ive been experiencing hip problems since around age 15. At first there was no pain, but around that time people started commenting on how I walked funny. I never noticed it myself, it felt normal to me.  (Maybe because that was all that I was used to)

Then probably a year after people started commenting on the way that I walk, I starting have pain when I stood or walked for a long time. I was waitressing at that time and during and after every shift my knee and hip would be killing me. So I went to the doctors who said it was probably just a muscle weakness and they sent me to Physical Therapy. That helped with the pain and I didnt experience any problems for about 9 months.

Then the pain came back and got progessivly worse. It was never dehabilitating but it was always uncomfortable. For example, when I would go to the mall, by the end of the trip I was always in pain. I used to run a lot but then the pain started getting worse with that too. Then I started having sharp pains in both hips when I would go up and down steps. So I finally made another appointment with my Orthopedic doctor and he took some xrays.

The Xrays came back and he said that he noticed I had hip dysplasia but it was nothing to worry about now, just that I would probably get arthritis when I was older. I kind of gave him a look like "oh great" and he was like "Well its not definate, just that a lot of people with hip dysplasia get arthritis." And that was that, he didnt mention anything else about the hip dysplasia. He said the same thing as a few years ago, that I probably had a muscle weakness and gave me another perscription for Physical Therapy.

I came home and out of curiosity Googles "Hip Dysplasia." I found all these blogs and websites about people who had been experiencing the same things as me! It was sort of exciting, in a weird way, that I finally knew what was wrong and I wasnt the only one! I read up on the Periacetabular Osteotomy and wondered why my doctor didnt even mention that there was any possible solution to the hip dysplasia. Apparantly, not a lot of doctors know about the surgery or hip dysplasia in general.

So I did some more research and found out that there happens to be a surgeon right in my town who performs these PAOs. I made an appointment with him and Im going on Nov 5th. It seems so far away, I just want answers now!

Im also in Physical Therapy right now for my hips (second time in 2 years). Ive been working on strengthening the outside of my legs. My PT had me do some exercise where I lay on my side and rotate my hip and it was popping all over the place! It kind of scared her I think, she just said to me "OH OK lets not do that!" Haha.

Also, as I was walking home from the bar last night with a few of my friends. One of the guys come walking up next to me obviously imitating my limp to make fun of me. And I laughed at him and was like "I cant help it I have a problem!" Of course then hes like "Oh Oh Im sorry! I thought you were just trying to be cute and stick your butt out!" Ahhh!

So I made this blog just to keep track of my symptoms before I go to the doctors to talk about my hips. I have an appointment with Dr. Hungerford on Nov 5. I feel like thats so far away!! Ah well at least Ill be in PT until then.

Today I went for a walk in Rock Hall with my family for about 45 min. The beginning I felt perfectly fine, then after about 10 min I had a little pain or stress in my right lower back. Then I was fine the rest of the walk. It wasnt until after the walk when I layed down that I started to get the usual dull ache in my right hip. Then as I was laying on my right side I was getting shooting pains in my left hip! Now, a few hours later, Im sitting here and my right lower back/upper hip is aching. I feel like I just need to move around to stop the pain! Ugh.....

Now that Ive seen a lot of xrays of people with DHD I want to get mine and look at them again. Im going to try to get them from my doctors when I go to PT on Tuesday. I wonder if the PT is really even helping, its been 3 weeks and I dont see much of a change. And I wonder why Im not experincing pain until AFTER my walks? Oooh the mysteries of my dysfunctional body!
